FOR EMILY: Don’t expect new County Supervisor Don Saltarelli to take a back seat. For example, he’s managed to convince the other supervisors to hold a day meeting next Tuesday instead of their scheduled night meeting. Reason: Halloween. . . . Says Saltarelli: “If you could see Emily [his 3-year-old daughter] in this bridesmaid costume she’s made, you’d understand the importance to get out there with her and collect the candy.”

FOR OLD TOM: When Orange High School supporters were looking for old photographs for a historical calendar (B3), they discovered a shortage of good documentation of local history. Bad timing too. . . . The crew shooting parts of the new Tom Hanks movie in Orange is looking for 1960s shots of the downtown Plaza. . . . “We don’t have them,” says Adrienne Gladson, local historical society president. “We need them. I think families just hold on to them.” If you have any to lend, call City Hall ([714] 744-5500).

BLUE HUMOR: Former Anaheim police chief Harold Bastrup (1974-1978) has written a book about his law enforcement career, “One Police Officer’s Experiences,” which includes both humor and hard looks at crime. On the funny side: At dedication ceremonies for Disneyland’s Matterhorn in 1959, Walt Disney’s guest was Veep Richard Nixon. The crowd was startled when a clown handed a little boy his bouquet of balloons and they took him airborne. . . . Turns out the boy was a dummy. But, says Bastrup: “Walt had not been forewarned, and he was none too happy about the stunt.”

ROLL ‘EM: Mexican author Josa Agustin, distinguished visiting professor in UC Irvine’s Spanish and Portuguese department, is teaching a graduate course on literature and cinema in Mexico. The students’ essays will become a book for which Agustin will write the introduction (E1). Is the renowned author a big movie fan? “Since I was a kid, I love the cinema,” says Agustin, who sometimes goes to the movies twice a week. “Here in the U.S. I’ve been going a lot.”
