Four Wounded as Russian Police Fire on Chechen Rally
At least four people were wounded here Tuesday when police opened fire on protesters angry about changes to the Moscow-appointed administration in Chechnya.
The rally by about 3,000 Chechens, supporters of Chechen leader Gen. Dzhokar M. Dudayev, was called to protest the appointment of Doku Zavgayev as leader of the Moscow-installed Government of National Revival.
Protesters said police had been ordered to open fire to disperse the gathering and one demonstrator had been killed. No independent confirmation of the death was available.
Pro-Dudayev rallies have been taking place in Grozny for weeks, but Tuesday’s incident appeared to be the first to end in violence.
