VW to Build New Beetle: After nearly two years of teasing car buyers with the prospect of a new Beetle, Volkswagen has confirmed it will produce a modern version of the car in Mexico and sell it in the United States. Volkswagen Chairman Ferdinand Piech announced at the Tokyo Motor Show that Volkswagen’s Puebla, Mexico, plant will produce the Concept 1 vehicle. The Concept 1 was unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, 1994, and drew rave reviews as the Beetle’s successor. VW has indicated in the past that the car would be mainly aimed at the United States, Canada and some Latin American markets, with production starting in 1998 or 1999 and a price of $12,000 to $13,000.
