Tupac Interview Rankles

Why do you choose to glorify convicted felon Tupac Shakur on the cover of Calendar? (Q&A; With Tupac Shakur, Calendar, Oct. 25). I don’t care how “best-selling” his music is, the man has a long criminal record. What do you think teens think when they see a nice big picture of him with a long interview? That it’s OK to be on the wrong side of the law? Sexual abuse and alleged weapons violations are nothing to laugh at, yet because this man makes millions, he gets front-page press. Why don’t you ever appeal to the population who finds him, and others like him, morally reprehensible and stop printing garbage like this?

I did write a letter of encouragement to Tupac Shakur. I like some of his music, especially “Dear Mama,” which went right to this homie’s heart.

Along with the encouragement, though, was a plea for him to understand that his talent comes with much responsibility and that he could have a big impact on his young fans if he could find his way. Reading his interview, I’m not sure he got the whole message but, as always, I’m an optimist.
