Obituaries : Howard E. Wilkening; Psychology Professor

Howard E. Wilkening, 85, a professor of psychology who was a member of the original faculty at Cal State Los Angeles. He taught at the state school from its beginnings in 1948 until his retirement in 1974, at which time he was the faculty member with the longest tenure on campus. Educated at New York University and the University of Colorado, Wilkening was in social work in New York City and taught at Purdue University and USC before moving to Cal State L.A., then known as the Ramona campus. The author of three books, Wilkening edited the Scanstyles journal and was associate editor of the Journal of Marriage and Family Living. He was a consultant at the Bobrick Manufacturing Corp. in North Hollywood for four decades, served two years as director of the mental hygiene clinic of Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital and was head psychologist for 10 years at the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic. He earned a citation from the War Department after World War II for his work as operations analyst in the Army Air Corps. On Oct. 19 in Solvang from the complications of a stroke.
