World IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : Ship Carrying 500 on Verge of Sinking

A Nigerian ship with more than 500 passengers and crew was on the verge of sinking in deep waters off the Liberian port of Buchanan, peacekeepers in Liberia said. An SOS from the captain identified the ship only as MV-4, they said, adding that most of the passengers were West African traders with heavy goods, including many cars, machinery and scrap metal. Dozens of local fishing boats were mobilizing for a rescue effort.
