Four Algerians were jailed Saturday on suspicion of links to a support network for Algerian Muslim extremists operating on French soil, their lawyers said.

Anti-terrorist Magistrate Jean-Francois Ricard ordered an investigation of the men in a probe stemming from guerrilla bombings that have killed seven people and injured about 170 in France since July.

They were detained for questioning after the latest police swoop on Paris and its suburbs, carried out last week in search of clues to the bombers’ identities.

Justice sources said the four men, in their late 20s and early 30s, were suspected of having forged identity papers for guerrillas conducting clandestine activities in France.
