The Future Is Then: The future of the biotechnology and telecommunications industries--and their importance to California’s economic development--will be discussed Tuesday at a gathering of business, science and political leaders in Los Angeles. “The Futurists Conference of Biotechnology/Instrumentation and Telecommunications Development” will focus on “cutting edge” news about these industries. Speakers will include California Lt. Gov. Gray Davis, who will discuss biotechnology, and Julie Meier Wright, secretary of the California Trade and Commerce Agency, who will lead a discussion of the telecommunications field. Topics will include patent and tax laws affecting the two industries and the availability of financing for start-up companies. Scientists and researchers from private industry and academia will discuss new developments in fields ranging from DNA research to the convergence of the telecommunications and entertainment industries. The event, sponsored by the law firm Robbins, Berliner & Carson and accountants Ernst & Young, runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hotel Intercontinental. The cost is $70.
