Netscape Cuts Prices on Some Software Products: The company said it wants to speed acceptance of its servers to lock in its position in the market. The Netscape Commerce Server 1.12 for UNIX was cut to $2,995 from $5,000, the model for Microsoft Corp.’s Windows NT was lowered to $1,295 from $2,995, the Communications Server 1.12 for UNIX was dropped to $1,295 from $1,495, and the Windows NT model was cut to $495 from $795. Server sales accounted for 37% of the company’s $20.8 million in third-quarter sales, up from 28% in the second quarter. Although the Mountain View, Calif.-based company is known for its browsing software, it said it plans to garner most of its profits from the more expensive server software.
