Here’s a look at the formula used by the Pacific 10 Conference to determine the league’s Rose Bowl representative if the race ends in a tie, which would happen if USC and Washington win their last three games:

USC is 4-0-1 in Pac-10 play, 6-1-1 overall. Washington is 4-0-1, 5-2-1.

If either team is ranked first or second in the AP or USA Today/CNN polls after the regular season, then it goes to the Rose Bowl. If neither is so ranked and they tied, as USC and Washington did Saturday:

--Count four points for a Pac-10 victory.

--Count three for a non-Pac-10 victory against a Division I-A team.

--Count two for a non-Pac-10 victory against a non-I-A team.

--Count two for a Pac-10 tie.

--Count 1 1/2 points for a non-Pac-10 tie against a I-A team.

--Count one point for a non-Pac-10 tie against a non-I-A team.

If after all that a tie remains, the team that most recently appeared in the Rose Bowl is eliminated.
