Fredrick Chandler; Son of Times Mirror Director

Newport Beach resident Fredrick Chandler died of head injuries suffered in a car accident in the Red Rock Canyon area of Las Vegas. He was 22.

The accident occurred Oct. 20 when Chandler was driving home from dinner with his father, Bruce Chandler. The younger Chandler lost control of his car and veered off the road. He was airlifted to Las Vegas Trauma Center, where he died six days later.

Chandler, a member of the family with a controlling stake in Times Mirror Co., owner of the Los Angeles Times, graduated in December from UC Berkeley, where he earned a degree in biochemistry. He moved to Newport Beach following graduation, and his family said he was applying to medical schools.

On Tuesday, Chandler’s relatives and friends gathered in the home of his mother, Asa Chandler, in Ketchum, Idaho, where he grew up. They remembered a young man they said was “considerate and kind.”

“He was what every father would want in a son,” said Bruce Chandler, a Times Mirror director who lives in Las Vegas. “He was loving and caring and thoughtful and kind. He would go out of his way to help anyone, to do them a favor.”

Asa Chandler added: “He was everything that was good in life.”

Chandler was a sports enthusiast, and particularly enjoyed fishing, surfing, sailing, running and martial arts.

He is survived by his parents, brothers Patrick and Philip Chandler, and sister Ashley Chandler.

Fredrick Chandler was the grandson of the late Philip Chandler, who served as vice president and general manager of The Times, the great-grandson of Harry Chandler, and the great-great grandson of Gen. Harrison Gray Otis, publisher of the Los Angeles Times in its early years and founder of Times Mirror.

A memorial service has been scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Presbyterian Church of the Bigwood in Ketchum. Family members have asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Chandler Fund at the Bank of America in Ketchum and sent to P.O. Box 299, Ketchum, Ida. 83340.

The fund eventually will be used to establish a scholarship in Fredrick Chandler’s name at his high school alma mater, the Community School, in Ketchum.
