Continued Growth Expected for Semiconductor Industry: The computer and consumer electronics booms are fueling ever-rising demand for semiconductors that will lift industry growth more than 26% next year, according to a trade group. Worldwide chip sales will reach $185.1 billion next year, the Semiconductor Industry Assn. said in a forecast. Sales should rise 18.1% in 1997 to $218.6 billion, and 19.6% to $261.5 billion in 1998. That will be the eighth straight year that the industry has grown, said Ray Stata, chairman and chief executive of Analog Devices of Norwood, Mass. The growth of the computer industry is not the only reason the semiconductor industry will prosper. Chips are increasingly going into cars, telephones and other everyday items.
