VENTURA : Homeless Center to Open With New Goal

Share

A homeless center will open today at a new site in Ventura, with a revamped mission to help those displaced by last winter’s floods in the Ventura River estuary.

Mayor Tom Buford and county Supervisor Susan Lacey will open the center, a former Ventura Lumber facility at 691 Riverside Drive, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m.

The acronym HERO, which used to stand for Homeless Emergency Relocation Operation, now represents the name, Homeless Employment Resource Operation.

“The relocation of the HERO center to its new home represents a new beginning,” Buford said. “The chief goal of the new HERO operation will be to empower people to become self-sufficient through employment opportunities.”

The project received an award of excellence at the League of California Cities’ annual conference in San Francisco on Oct. 22.
