Van Nuys : Bob Hope Aide to Talk About Show Business

Share

After holding comedian Bob Hope’s cue cards for 43 years, Studio City resident Barney McNulty knows a little bit about entertainment--particularly entertainment in the San Fernando Valley.

McNulty, who was working as an usher at CBS when in 1949 actor-comedian Ed Wynn’s cue card person suddenly fell ill, took over. He’s been in show business ever since.

He will share his memories and some Valley entertainment history Monday at the Valley College Historical Museum Assn. meeting.

“My own experience has been in aviation, radio, television and horses,” McNulty joked. “Although I don’t know as much about horses as I would like to.”

His most vivid memories, he said, are hiding cue cards under airplanes to avoid rain in the Mediterranean, coping with frozen marker ink in Korea and receiving an apology from the managers of the Palladium when they came up 1,000 cue cards short for a show.

The meeting will take place at 3 p.m., in the Cafeteria Conference Room at Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys. For more information, call (818) 781-1200, Ext. 373 between 1 and 4 p.m.
