Eight people were hurt--four critically--when a crowded Nissan Sentra ran a red light and hit a Buick late Thursday, Los Angeles police said Friday.

The Nissan, driven by Francisco Villa, 21, of Moorpark, was heading south on Tampa Avenue about 11:40 p.m. Thursday when it ran the light and hit the Buick, which was traveling west on Devonshire Street, said Officer Edward Washchak.

Villa and the five passengers in his Nissan--all men between the ages of 19 and 25--were injured, as were the 76-year-old driver of the Buick and his wife, 77, who was riding with him.

Four passengers in the Nissan were critically hurt, while the others suffered minor to serious injuries, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.

Washchak said Villa was driving without a license and was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
