That’s Show Biz

Animal magnetism doesn’t come without effort. Just ask the workers at the San Diego Zoo. They’re the ones who feed and primp the 4,000 stars that draw an audience of millions each year to their 100-acre stage. In addition to familiar favorites such as lions, elephants and giraffes, the cast includes the rare and exotic--Komodo dragons from Indonesia, wild Przewalski’s horses from Mongolia and Sichuan takins from China. And because they are stars, not any food will do. From trees of eucalyptus, acacia, palm and banana--grown on the grounds--come the greens that make a performer ready for his close-up, Mr. De Mille.
