Israeli Papers Mourn Loss of Peacemaker
A black border surrounded the front page of the Jerusalem Post newspaper on Sunday.
“Rabin Assassinated,” its top headline screamed.
“No Israeli, no Jew, no decent human being anywhere can help being shaken to the core, shattered to the depth of his and her soul by the news,” it wrote in a rare front-page editorial.
Israeli newspapers, reporting Rabin’s killing by a Jewish gunman at a peace rally, reflected the shock and fury that swept the Jewish state on Sunday.
They voiced disbelief that he was murdered by an Israeli Jew and in a country where security was always a top priority.
“The victim of peace,” the liberal Haaretz called Rabin in its editorial.
