Cat Ladies
“When Cat Fancy Goes Too Far” (Oct. 30) missed the point completely. Instead of depicting caring but improvident women as “eccentric cat ladies,” the real villains here should be mentioned.
They are the persons who abandon their cats and/or fail to have them neutered. This creates the huge numbers of unwanted cats, starving and mistreated, in our streets and alleys, or put to death in our public-funded shelters every day.
The reason women, rather than men, are likely to collect numerous animals is simple: It is the maternal instinct to nurture, provide for and protect the helpless and the dependent. This certainly describes the domestic cat, the most beautiful, loving creature on Earth.
