Sponsors Sought for Teacher Grants

A national grant program that provides teachers with $400 stipends to create model lesson plans is looking for Ventura County businesses to take part in the awards.

The Impact II program needs up to $18,000 in business donations so that it can make at least 40 grants to Ventura County teachers, said Phil Palbaum, coordinator of the program.

Impact II is part of a national program that is run locally by the Ventura County superintendent of schools office, Palbaum said. The Ventura County Economic Development Assn., a county business group, also takes part, he said.

Last year, 25 teachers won grants and created lesson plans that were used by more than 600 other instructors in the county, Palbaum said.

“Teachers talking to teachers is the best way to get cutting-edge information into the classroom,” he said.

Corporate sponsors are honored, along with the winning teachers, at an annual dinner in May, Palbaum said. Some of this year’s sponsors include First Interstate Bank, the Oxnard Board of Realtors, the Camarillo Rotary Club and Procter & Gamble in Oxnard.
