A man angry that the car he was following on the Ventura Freeway wasn’t going fast enough shot into the car during afternoon rush-hour traffic and wounded the driver, authorities said.

CHP officials said the unidentified man was traveling eastbound on the freeway near the Woodman Avenue exit at about 5:45 p.m. Monday when the driver of a red truck behind him started blowing his horn.

“He was mad because the driver would not speed up,” CHP spokeswoman Kerri Hawkins said. “He had been tailgating him for a while.”

Apparently still fuming, the truck driver pulled alongside the car and fired once. The bullet went through the car door and grazed the man’s elbow and thigh before lodging in the driver’s seat.

Hawkins said the suspect sped off as witnesses watched in horror.

The wounded driver pulled to a call box and alerted CHP officials that he had been shot. He was treated and released at the scene, Hawkins said.

Based on a description of the suspect’s car, CHP officers detained a man minutes after the shooting, but he was later released.

Hawkins said police were still investigating the incident to determine if there was any other reason for the shooting.
