FOR ISRAEL: Sunday’s Community Fair at the Jewish Federation Campus in Costa Mesa is an annual event, but the assassination of Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin adds new meaning. A solidarity program for Israel has since been added. . . . An art show at the fair includes a serigraph “Camp David Peace Treaty” signed by Jimmy Carter, Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin. . . . Rabin owned one of the limited edition prints.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: George Bush’s Newport Beach meeting with Ford Motor executives wasn’t his only reason for being here last weekend. . . . He was also scheduled to visit Mission San Juan Capistrano last Sunday, to get a look at a commemorative tile purchased for $300 in his honor and engraved with his name during a mission fund-raising campaign. But the Rabin funeral in Israel forced the former President to cancel his mission visit. . . . Says mission administrator Gerald J. Miller: “Perhaps another time.”

PEARL GEM: Pierce Flynn, who runs the San Clemente-based Surfrider Foundation, had surfed many times with Eddie Vedder, above, of rock music’s Pearl Jam. And he knew that Vedder cared about the ocean’s environment. But when the Pearl Jam singer announced at a sold-out Monday concert in San Diego (F1) that the band was donating $50,000 to Surfrider, Flynn was caught off guard. . . . “I was shocked,” says Pierce. “Pearl Jam is known for its commitment to causes, but that’s still a lot of money.”

DRY POND DAYS: It was five years ago today that the first shovel went into the barren property along Katella Avenue in Anaheim that became first the Anaheim Arena and later, due to Disneyland’s powerful persuasion, The Pond. Many then were skeptical that it would draw a major sports franchise any time soon. But hockey’s Mighty Ducks are in their third season. . . . A report issued Tuesday shows its 500 events have brought through the doors 3.7 million ticketholders.
