Radio Station Airs Council Meetings

Oxnard residents now have a chance to pump up the volume on local government, as a Los Angeles County public radio station has started to broadcast portions of the weekly City Council meetings.

KCRW (89.1 FM), a station based at Santa Monica College, has begun carrying Oxnard City Council meetings from 8 to 11 p.m on Tuesdays. The station recently decided to air the Oxnard meetings to Oxnard-area listeners instead of the Santa Monica council meetings it broadcasts elsewhere.

Although the Oxnard council meetings begin at 7 p.m., Oxnard City Clerk Daniel Martinez said that having the bulk of the sessions broadcast on radio should allow more city residents to keep up with local affairs.

“Some people can’t watch on [cable] TV, so this may give them a way to stay in touch,” Martinez said. “We’re really happy the station decided to do this.”
