Having convinced the city that it will not draw a bad element, the Q-Club and Cafe on Mesa Verde Drive won City Council approval this week to sell beer and wine.
“This is a restaurant where people can play pool,” said Chris Proctor, attorney for the Q-Club’s owner. “This is not one of those places we are all afraid of.”
Some residents had objected. “What kind of a message are we sending our kids if we are saying you can’t go out and have a good time without serving alcohol?” resident Nancy Palme asked the council.
Councilman Gary Monahan said that the club has agreed to sell only single servings of alcohol, thus reducing the likelihood of drunkenness.
Lt. Alan Kent from the Costa Mesa Police Department agreed, saying he had inspected the pool hall and was satisfied it would not cause problems in the area.
