N.J. Governor Has Surgery for Benign Ovarian Cyst

TRENTON, N.J. — Gov. Christine Todd Whitman underwent successful surgery Friday to remove a benign ovarian cyst, her spokesman said. The surgery was scheduled and “not an emergency,” Carl Golden said.
Whitman, 49, was elected governor, her first major office, in 1993. An up-and-coming star of the Republican Party, she was the GOP’s choice to rebut President Clinton’s State of the Union address in January.
