Federal Shutdown

Share

The photograph (Nov. 11) explains why Americans are frustrated by government and its leaders. “Business as usual” was what the new Republicans committed to eliminating. But, here it is again! For the fifth time in 15 years, business as usual threatens to make the U.S. look foolish in the eyes of the world. Gleefully holding up a golf club, Sen. Bob Dole and Rep. Newt Gingrich exchange barbs over Bill Clinton, while the President happily golfs away the day. Instead of closed-door posturing, the sides should figure out what the American people want. We want a prudently managed balanced budget. We expect disciplined budget negotiations--not political gamesmanship.

Governmental leaders are not listening. Americans are sick of the business-as-usual nonsense that ignores reality. America’s reality is that our educational system is crumbling; Social Security and Medicare are threatened; corporate America’s right-sizing has totally de-motivated the work force; crime, drugs and guns are out control; and the government donates billions to foreign governments while the nation is in debt and its people are hungry, unemployed and poorly educated. Cut foreign aid; we can’t afford it.

Newt, Bill, Bob, wake up--or get out.

* With the shutdown of the government, perhaps the Republicans will declare victory and come home.

* The White House and Congress can’t agree on a budget so all “nonessential” services will be shut down--it’s about time!
