SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Beds come in many shapes, forms and sizes--bunk beds, daybeds, sofa beds, trundle beds, rollaways, futons and, of course, kings, queens, standards and twins. The designs and styles in each of these categories are wide and varied.

Beds Unlimited offers all of these types of beds at prices that don’t strain the budget.

The daybeds are popular because they serve a double purpose--sleeping and sitting. Look up on the walls of this store and you’ll see a variety of daybeds displayed. All are made in the United States (many in Southern California), and they range from $89 to $399 for the frame.

One of the best-looking is the cheapest (isn’t that refreshing!)--a simple, well-designed wrought-iron daybed frame for $89; with mattress, trundle and a comforter set, it comes to $299.

One design that should please parents as well as kids is a bunk futon, a bunk bed made by Tempo with a futon that opens into a double bed. It sleeps three and is $339, compared to $399 at another discounter. With mattresses it’s $479.

During the ’94 Northridge quake, a ceiling fell on the Tempo bed display at Beds Unlimited’s former location, resulting in only a scratch and a slight dent. Tempo turns out strong and safe products, and when buying bunk beds, safety should be the first concern.

If you’re expecting a holiday visitor, you may need a rollaway bed, and we found one with a mattress for $99. I’ve seen this same bed around town for $149.

The mattresses carried by Beds Unlimited are mainly the Serta line, and the bargains are also obvious here. For example, a queen-size Body Pillow, one of Serta’s top lines, sells at some retailers for $1,299. You may find this at a discounter for $100 less, but Bed Unlimited’s everyday price is $1,089.

The Brookwood queen-size mattress, a Serta “perfect sleeper,” is always priced here at $699, $100 less than at most retailers.

All prices include local delivery, a bed frame if necessary and pickup of your old mattress. If your purchase exceeds $350, a $25 comforter is a gift.
