The largest chunk of $2.3 million in state grants awarded to the Santa Ana Unified School District will be used for textbooks and other instructional materials, trustees decided Tuesday.

After reviewing staff recommendations, the school board voted 4 to 0 to spend $1.37 million on classroom materials and the next-largest block of money, $610,000, for business equipment and other capital improvements.

The remaining money will go to music, sports and science programs and office equipment.

“We really have withheld supporting those areas for a long time,” said Audrey Yamagata-Noji, president of the board of trustees.
