Port Hueneme basketball, tennis and softball enthusiasts will have better facilities thanks to $70,000 the city will receive from a price-fixing settlement between the Reebok shoe company and the state.

Port Hueneme is one of nine cities and organizations to receive funds from an April settlement that netted California $900,000, which the state distributed to local groups. The company paid $9.5 million nationwide.

The city will use $45,000 to replace the lighting system at the Moranda Park softball fields, $20,000 to resurface tennis courts and $5,000 to resurface basketball courts.

Port Hueneme, which had no connection to the lawsuit, applied for the funds in August. The lawsuit was based on a 1994 investigation into price-fixing by several states, including California.

City officials said the money was especially important because of budgetary cutbacks to the recreation department, which drastically reduced program and maintenance funds.
