Carter (Ray) Kenney, a 50-year county resident, died Thursday of heart failure at Ojai Valley Community Hospital.

He was born Aug. 30, 1937, in Taft, Calif.

An Oak View resident since 1945, Kenney retired in 1987 as a machinist for VETCO, where he made parts for off-shore oil rigs.

He was a member of the Ojai Valley Gun Club and the Ventura Road Runners, a group that races remote-controlled cars.

“He loved cars, he had always loved old cars,” said Judy Kenney, his wife of 34 years. “He had worked on cars since he was a little boy.”

The couple often drove dune buggies together, she recalled.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Bruce Kenney of Oak View; daughter Sheila Hoeflich of Urbandale, Iowa; mother Minnie Marie Kenney of Ojai; sisters Lucille Elrod of Ojai and Ethel Mullikin of Clovis; and two grandchildren.

Pastor James Groves will officiate today at a private family memorial service. Kenney’s ashes will be scattered at sea.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home of Ojai.
