Dave Allison was hired Tuesday to coach the Ottawa Senators, who fired Rick Bowness after eight consecutive losses.

“It’s a happy day today for the Ottawa Senators,” Ottawa General Manager Randy Sexton said.

Allison, 36, becomes the second coach in the history of the Senators (6-13), who are in their fifth season. He was the coach at Charlottetown, Ottawa’s top farm team. Last season, he led Prince Edward Island to the Atlantic Division title in the American Hockey League.

Before that, Allison coached in the East Coast Hockey League, the International Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League after playing six years in the minors.
