Sherman Oaks : City Panel Urges End to Redevelopment Plan

The effort to dismantle the Sherman Oaks redevelopment project took a step forward this week when a city panel recommended halting the plan.

The City Council’s Housing and Redevelopment Committee on Tuesday recommended that the Sherman Oaks plan, which was designed to raise funds for earthquake rebuilding projects, be shut down due to community opposition.

Residents feared that the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency might approve commercial development they did not want, according to Richard Close, president of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn.

City Councilman Mike Feuer testified in favor of ending the project, citing community concerns and saying that earthquake rebuilding can be accomplished through current Housing Department programs and other resources.

The process of dismantling the project will probably take several months and is estimated to cost about $100,000, according to Howard Gantman, Feuer’s assistant chief deputy.

Feuer, whose district includes Sherman Oaks, is looking into ways to shorten the process and reduce the cost, Gantman said.
