Rare Birds--A flock of white pelicans has stopped at the Bolsa Chica wetlands. Get a close look on a guided tour of the wetlands Saturday morning.

The tours, sponsored by Amigos de Bolsa Chica, will depart from the wetlands’ ecological reserve every 20 minutes beginning at 9 a.m. The last tour will depart at 10:40.

Other birds spotted at the wetlands include great blue herons, black-necked stilts, skimmers and peregrine falcons. Tours are led by naturalists familiar with the wetlands’ plants and wildlife, making this an opportunity for children to learn about saltwater marshes.

Layered clothing is recommended; heavy coastal fog has kept morning temperatures unseasonably cool. Those with avian interests should bring binoculars and bird identification books.

The wetlands is a perfect location to set up a tripod; the variety of species offers great nature shots. The ecological reserve is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset.

Those interested in the free tour are asked to meet at the wetlands on Pacific Coast Highway about one-half mile south of Warner Avenue, across from Bolsa Chica State Beach.

Sanctuary--South Coast Audubon will sponsor a field trip to San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, next to the Audubon House, at 8 a.m. Saturday. More than 50 species were identified during last year’s expedition.

Reservations are not necessary. Beginning and advanced bird-watchers are welcome.

To reach the Audubon House, take the San Diego Freeway to the Jamboree Road exit and head south. Turn left at Michelson Drive, and then make a right at the second signal onto Irvine Ranch Water District property. Follow the paved road and “Duck Club” signs to the house. For more information, call South Coast Audubon at (714) 582-1776.
