USC Women Are Trounced, 85-55, by Oklahoma State in First Game

Gina Shaterkina scored 17 points and Renee Roberts 14 Saturday as Oklahoma State rolled over No. 16 USC, 85-55, in the season opener for both teams.

Oklahoma State scored seven points in a row--five by Shaterkina--to take a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes, and the Trojans got no closer than five after that. Oklahoma State led by 20 at halftime and widened the margin to 33 three times in the second half.

Oklahoma State took advantage of poor shooting by USC, which made only 31% of its shots (18 of 59) and committed 21 turnovers.

“I wasn’t surprised,” said Fred Williams, USC’s first-year coach. “Oklahoma State’s a fine team. I told my team that from day one. They played well tonight. Their defense was extremely impressive.”

Tina Thompson had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans, who were outrebounded, 45-33.
