ROUNDUP : Northridge Goes East to End Streak at 31

Cal State Northridge broke a 31-game losing streak in games against Division I teams with a 61-56 victory over Central Connecticut in a women’s basketball game at Columbia in New York.

Pam Karbowski had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Matadors, while Sarah Hagman, playing in relief of Karbowski, added 11 points and eight steals--missing Shelli Mosby’s school record for steals by one.

“My biggest concern coming to Northridge was developing a winning attitude,” Northridge Coach Michael Abraham said. “Their true character showed tonight in the face of adversity.”

The Matadors (1-1), whose only victory last season came against Division II Cal State Los Angeles, led, 30-28, at the half, then opened a 12-point lead with 1 minute 10 seconds left in the game.

Vicki Guarneri hit two three-point baskets and Central Connecticut closed the gap to 59-56 with 16 seconds remaining. But Tammie Mills hit two free throws for the Matadors with six seconds left.

Pepperdine 79, New Orleans 63--The Waves, who start four guards and a forward, out-rebounded the Privateers, 58-51, en route to their first victory in a consolation game of the New Orleans tournament at Lakefront Arena.

Guard Clare Walker had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Waves (1-1). Guard Sara Pierce added 16 points and 13 rebounds, and forward Tabitha Bailey had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Moorpark 74, Hancock 51--Tim Nunnery had 22 points and seven assists for the Raiders in the semifinals of the Ventura tournament.

Brady Mertes had 16 points for Moorpark (3-3), which had a 39-19 lead at halftime.

Canyons 74, Orange Coast 67--Rex Saputo came off the bench to score 17 points for the Cougars (2-3) in a nonconference game.

Brent Stout added 12 points, Kahyeed Murray scored 11, and Billy Bedgood had nine points and 12 rebounds for Canyons.

Valley 92, Victor Valley 78--Mike Farmer had 18 points, eight assists and three steals for the Monarchs (4-1) in a nonconference game. Tomer Yachini added 17 points and 15 rebounds.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Pepperdine 6, Pacific 4--Jack Kocur had three goals and Quenton Bebeau had five saves for the Waves (14-9) in a consolation match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament at Newport Harbor High.
