Winds gusting up to 35 m.p.h. swept through the San Fernando Valley Monday, causing power outages, knocking down trees and swaying cars.
Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Lucia Alvelias said 800 homes in Pacoima and another 400 in Reseda lost power for much of the morning because of the winds.
Most of the power was restored by noon, Alvelias said.
Weather Data meteorologist Curtis Brack said Van Nuys had the strongest winds Monday, recorded at 35 m.p.h.; Burbank recorded winds close to 30 m.p.h.
Brack described the strong winds as unusual, saying that Santa Ana winds usually start in October.
