CLUB REVIEW : A Swinging Spot for Teens to Retired Pros

Share

Do you have any doubt that Los Angeles is a multicultural mecca? Consider the Hana Lounge in the Hotel Nikko. Where else would you find a 14-piece orchestra conducted by a London-born drummer performing American big-band classics in a postmodern Japanese hotel--located in Beverly Hills, no less--during a Sunday brunch that features American-Euro-Asian cuisine?

While Paul Turner and his tuxedo-clad orchestra dazzle with energetic renditions of swing era music by the likes of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, patrons can sample food ranging from sushi to Belgian waffles. For those who just wanna swing the afternoon away, the Hana Lounge scene offers plenty of inspiration.

On Sundays the all-ages lounge, located in the Nikko’s lobby, attracts swing dancers who run the gamut from teen-age novices to retired pros. The 27-year-old Turner plays to the crowd, keeping folks in the mood with such numbers as, well, “In the Mood.”

To give dancers a bit of romance, featured vocalist Miranda Lloyd, 22, delivers sets that include Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald selections. The Hana Lounge inspires one to, in the words of a Fitzgerald song Lloyd performs, “Make Yourself Up.” The guests on a recent Sunday included a tousle-haired blonde in a swing skirt, stockings and garter belt dancing with her Asian partner, who was clad in a vintage zoot suit. A mecca, indeed.
