COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Master’s Snaps Riverside’s Home Winning Streak at 25

The Master’s College men’s basketball team upset UC Riverside in overtime, 88-85, in a nonconference game Thursday night, breaking Riverside’s 25-game home winning streak, which dated to 1993.

With 1 minute 17 seconds left in overtime, Leo Gorauskas was fouled on a layup and converted a three-point play to put Master’s up for good, 86-83.

Riverside, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II and the division runner-up last season, had not lost a home nonconference game since 1982.

The Mustangs, ranked sixth in NAIA, received 28 points from Mike Penberthy. Matt Kordik added 19 points.

Riverside was led by Erik Kennady’s 22 points.

Valley 87, Desert 60--Vernon Simmons and Willie O’Neal each scored 15 points to pace the Monarchs (5-1) in a first-round game of the Barstow tournament.

Simmons also added 10 rebounds and O’Neal had nine rebounds for Valley, which led, 40-26, at halftime.

Antelope Valley 112, L.A. Trade Tech 96--Marlon Tisdel scored 24 points and had 11 assists for the Marauders (6-3) in the first round of the Antelope Valley tournament. Jerome Payton added 21 points for Antelope Valley.

Riverside 96, College of the Canyons 83--Rex Saputo and Harry Marks led the Cougars (2-4) in the opening round of the Antelope Valley tournament. Riverside is 9-1.

The Cougars were down by 17 at the half, shooting only 33% from the field, but outscored Riverside, 52-48, in the second half.

WOMEN

Loyola Marymount 90, Cal Lutheran 42--Nicole Gaines scored 21 points and Marlee Webb added 17 as the Lions cruised past the Regals in a nonconference game at Loyola Marymount.

Monika Nagy scored 11 points, and Nicole Albert and Evi Orologas each added 10 for Cal Lutheran (0-3), which shot 23.2% from the field.

Cal Lutheran made only four of 27 shots from three-point range.

Ventura 110, Kings River 29--Adria Snead had 24 points to lead the Pirates in a first-round game of the Sequoias tournament in Visalia. Marina Torres added 20 points and seven steals for Ventura (5-0).

Valley 62, Santa Rosa 60--The Monarchs blew a 16-point lead in the final nine minutes but recovered as Valerie Brady hit a five-foot shot with four seconds left in the first round of the College of the Sequoias tournament. Brady, Valley’s only sophomore, finished with 20 points.

Shawanda Hotchkiss had 15 points and eight rebounds for Valley (4-1).

Tiffani Rupp and Shondra Stibi each had 18 points for Santa Rosa.
