Ex-Phar-Mor President Sentenced: Michael (Mickey) Monus, the discount drugstore chain’s co-founder and former president who was convicted in May of masterminding a $1.1-billion fraud and embezzlement scheme, was sentenced to more than 19 years in prison. Monus will also be fined $1 million, a spokeswoman for U.S. District Court in Cleveland said. Phar-Mor emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in September as a publicly traded company with investor-retailer Robert Haft at its helm. It was once a $3-billion chain with more than 300 stores. In September it had 102 stores, and in 1994 sales were $1.85 billion. Monus was fired in 1992 after the company unearthed a massive fraud that led to its bankruptcy filing. Monus was convicted on 109 felony counts.
