U.S., EU Aim to Drop All Tariffs on Information Technology: The United States and the European Union plan to negotiate the phase-out of tariffs on major information technology products by 2000 as part of their new trade initiative, U.S. industry and government officials said. If successful, the negotiations could save American companies as much as $1 billion annually in tariffs they currently pay on products shipped to Europe, according to the Information Technology Industry Council, which represents high-technology companies in Washington. The talks will affect semiconductors, computers, computer parts and software.
