IBM to Give Networks More Emphasis: The Armonk, N.Y.-based firm will increase its research spending on network-based computing and form an Internet division in its software group, Chief Executive Louis Gerstner Jr. said. Existing product groups will be responsible for their own network-focused planning. “We will not create a centralized organization outside our current units to lead what must be an enterprise-wide program,” Gerstner said in a memo to employees. Gerstner was traveling and could not be reached for further comment. His two-page memo echoes themes from recent interviews and speeches about the need for International Business Machines Corp. to concentrate on computing that involves networks.
