Freighter Off Canada in Danger of Sinking
A Maltese-flagged freighter with at least 29 people aboard was listing badly and in danger of breaking up in gale-force winds about 930 miles southeast of Halifax on Friday, the Canadian navy said.
The Mount Olympus, a 721-foot bulk carrier, took on water off Nova Scotia, but the flooding was contained by using pumps that were flown to the ship and dropped to the crew by a U.S. Coast Guard C-130 aircraft, the Coast Guard said.
A spokesman in New York said the ship was not carrying cargo. The spokesman said its destination was Norfolk, Va., but did not know where its journey had started.
The Canadian Press news agency said the ship was Greek-owned and that all of the crew, except for a Greek superintendent, were Romanian. It also reported that the chief engineer’s wife was on board, bringing the total to 30.
