2,000 Expected for Marathon
Billed as a “pure race,” which means it doesn’t pay prize money, the 48th Western Hemisphere Marathon, the second-oldest such event, behind the Boston Marathon, will be run Sunday in Culver City beginning at 8 a.m.
More than 2,000 runners are expected, some of them seeking a qualifying time for Boston and a few others making a last-ditch attempt to qualify for the Olympic men’s and women’s marathon trials, to be held in February.
A time of 2 hours 22 minutes is needed to qualify for the men’s trials, and 2:50 for the women’s.
The marathon will be preceded by an in-line skating marathon at 7 a.m. and followed immediately by a 5,000-meter run.
