In response to “Christmas Spirit Wearing Thin” (Pop Eye, Nov. 26), there is a less cynical point of view that must be stated in defense of radio as well as the artists that participate in radio events.

Bush, which is signed to Trauma/Interscope Records, has performed in over 45 radio-sponsored events in 1995. The experience has been a beneficial partnership. Radio benefits from the artist’s performance . . . the band benefits from the exposure . . . fans are rewarded with some of the most exciting concerts of the year . . . and, most importantly, these events raise awareness and resources for local charities in each market.

Contrary to the opinions expressed in the article, I doubt that “some managers and labels are increasingly talking about avoiding them in the future” due to tactics including “blackmail and extortion.” It is an honor to be invited to perform at KROQ’s acoustic Christmas show; if there is any doubt about this, ask one of the hundreds of bands who clamor to participate.

Sure, from time to time we come up against some competing events and it is important to balance the many requests made on a touring band’s schedule. However, in resolving these so-called “radio wars,” I have found that radio programmers respond to honesty, respect and a sense of fair play.

Labels hardly feel bad asking radio for support 52 weeks a year. We certainly shouldn’t feel put-upon when asked to support those stations with a good cause from time to time.

Truly, this is one of the unique situations where everyone wins. C’mon guys, lighten up.
