Holiday Travel Tips

* Ship holiday gifts ahead of time. If you must take them with you, pack them in checked luggage so you won’t have to unwrap them at the airport security gates or carry them on in a sturdy box with a lift-off lid.

* Take an empty suitcase to pack gifts for the return trips.

* Remember: A direct flight is not always a nonstop flight.

* Dress for duress: Wear flat-soled, lace-up shoes so you can loosen them if your feet swell.

* Consider flying during youngsters’ bedtime; if they sleep through part of the trip, it will seem shorter to everyone.

* On the plane, use a rolled-up blanket for lumbar support and a pillow for neck support. If you can, rest your feet on a carry-on bag or a blanket.

* Arrive at the airport at least an hour before departure on domestic flights (two hours for international) to allow for congestion, security clearance and to avoid being bumped.

Order special airline meals in advance.

* Put luggage tags inside and outside your bags and lock luggage. If you check bags, use a carry-on for a toothbrush, prescription glasses and medications and a change of underwear--anything that you must have if your bags go missing.
