RJR’s Harper Gives Up CEO Title: RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. Chairman Charles M. Harper unexpectedly gave up his job as the food and tobacco company’s CEO due to “compelling personal circumstances” in his family, RJR announced. The RJR board selected President Steven F. Goldstone, who joined the company only 10 months ago, as its new chief executive. A spokeswoman for the company declined to discuss the reasons for Harper’s decision other than to say it involved the health of an unidentified member of his family. Harper, 68, was said to have recommended that the board select Goldstone. Harper will stay on as chairman both of RJR Nabisco and its food business, Nabisco Holdings Corp.
