Opposition Candidate Wounded in Egypt
A gunman Tuesday wounded a prominent Egyptian opposition candidate on the eve of a second round of parliamentary elections, as opposition parties complained of a continuing government crackdown and anticipated vote-rigging.
Security sources said a gunman in a speeding car shot and wounded New Wafd Party candidate Ayman Nour in a Cairo street.
Nour, deputy editor of the party newspaper Al Wafd, was hit by one bullet in the right side. He was hospitalized, but his condition was not immediately available.
The ruling National Democratic Party, which has dominated every parliament since 1978, won 124 of the 137 seats decided in the first round.
The second-round vote will fill 307 seats, with 10 other seats filled by appointment.
