Children participating in the city’s recreation and parks dance programs will be putting on a production of the holiday classic “The Nutcracker” this weekend at Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood.

Over 160 youngsters will be involved in the performance, according to park officials.

The ballet is a project of the department’s citywide cultural board, said Linda Davis, a senior recreation director at Echo Park. “Our aim is to provide these children with cultural experiences they would not normally have in the inner-city,” Davis said.

The dancers, who have been rehearsing since the summer, represent 11 recreation centers: Aliso Pico, Alpine, Bellevue, Carlin G. Smith, Echo Park, Garcia, Glassell, Lemon Grove, Lincoln Park, Wilmington and Westchester.
