Immigration Bill

Share

* I want to correct a statement made by Frank del Olmo in a recent column. He claimed that “conservative Republican House members from California are demanding that measures affecting legal immigrants be taken out of HR 2202 and considered separately” (Nov. 26).

In fact, all 25 Republicans in the California delegation signed a Nov. 20 letter to House Majority Leader Dick Armey asking him to bring HR 2202 to the floor as is--including the provisions that reform legal immigration. This letter demonstrates the consensus forming in Texas, California and across the nation on the urgent need for comprehensive reform of our immigration system.

This consensus is also evident in the bipartisan 23-10 vote by the House Judiciary Committee to refer the legislation to the House floor, where I believe a strong majority is likely to support it.
