American’s Pilots Propose New Service: Complaining that American Airlines has ceded too much of the domestic short-route market to rivals such as Reno Air and Midway Airlines, the union for American’s 9,000 pilots proposed that the airline return to flying short routes it has abandoned in recent years. The Allied Pilots Assn., currently in contract talks with American, made the offer on the heels of a tentative pact between Delta Air Lines and its pilots to inaugurate a short-haul service, or “airline within an airline,” in exchange for lower wages. The APA said salaries in its proposal would have to be negotiated. American, based in Fort Worth, said it would study the proposal.
