CIRCUS, CIRCUS: The world-famous Cirque du Soleil could make Pasadena its Southern California home in the winter of 1997, after a City Council decision to allow the performing troupe to use the Rose Bowl parking lot for 12 weeks.

The Pasadena City Council voted 6-0, with Councilman Bill Crowfoot absent, to allow promoter Edward Razor’s Raymond Entertainment to use the Rose Bowl parking lot for a huge tent housing the futuristic French-Canadian acrobatic circus.

But it’s not a done deal: Redondo Beach and two Orange County cities are also hoping to lure the circus for upcoming winter seasons.

Under the Pasadena proposal, Cirque du Soleil could use the venue for three additional 12-week periods every other year until 2003.

“This is a marvelous opportunity for Pasadena,” said Councilman Paul Little.

Even residents around the bowl, often opposed to events there, praised the idea. Nina Chomsky, president of Linda Vista / Annandale Residents’ Assn., said she was glad to see the city was finally getting something the residents would want to attend. . . .
